These two get compared constantly, usually by someone trying to decide how to spend between one and several thousand dollars on a car they just bought. The comparison is fair, but the framing is usually wrong: they do not protect against the same thing, so "which is better" has no answer until you say what you are protecting against.
What A Ceramic Coating Actually Stops
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to your clear coat as it cures, leaving a hard, glossy, water-repellent layer a few microns thick. A few microns is thinner than a sheet of paper. That tells you most of what you need to know about what it can and cannot do.
- Chemical etching — bird droppings, tree sap and road salt sit on top of the coating instead of eating into the clear coat, provided you remove them in reasonable time.
- UV fade and oxidation — the dulling that turns a black car grey over years of sun is slowed substantially.
- Water spotting and dirt adhesion — water beads and sheets off rather than drying in place, so less sticks between washes and washing gets faster.
- Gloss — a real, visible depth to the finish, which is the part most people actually buy it for.
What Paint Protection Film Actually Stops
Paint protection film is a thick, self-healing urethane sheet applied physically over the panels. It is a barrier with mass, and that is the entire difference.
- Rock chips — highway stone strikes on the bumper, hood and mirrors. This is impact damage, and film is the only thing that absorbs it.
- Scuffs and light scratches — many films self-heal shallow marks with heat.
- Parking and door-edge damage on the panels it covers.
Film is usually applied to the panels that take the hits — the front end, mirrors, rocker panels — rather than the whole car, because covering everything costs considerably more.
A ceramic coating is not a cheaper version of film. It is a different product solving a different problem. Nothing a coating does will stop a stone at highway speed, and no honest detailer will tell you otherwise.
So Which One Do You Need?
- You want gloss, easier washing, and protection from weather, salt and sap. That is a ceramic coating, and it is what most drivers are actually describing when they ask about protection.
- You do a lot of highway kilometres and you are worried about stone chips on the front end. That is film. A coating will not help you.
- You have a new or high-value car and want both. Film on the impact panels, coating over the top and across the rest of the car. They layer; the coating goes on last.
Where We Stand On This
We install ceramic coatings. We do not install paint protection film. We are telling you that here rather than at the end of a quote, because if stone chips are your real concern then film is the right answer and we are not the right shop for that part of the job.
What we will say is that a coating is only worth paying for on paint that is already right. Coating over existing swirl marks seals them in under a layer that lasts for years, which is why every one of our coating packages includes paint correction first rather than selling it as an upgrade. If you want the longer version of that argument, it is in our guide to paint correction vs. ceramic coating.
