Welland grew up on both sides of the Welland River and the canal. Since the bypass opened in 1973, freighters have used a newer channel east of downtown, and the old route through the middle of the city became the Welland Recreational Waterway. That water shapes the city, and often where a detail gets set up:

• Dain City — the south end, tucked into the point where the recreational waterway and the bypass channel meet. It started as a company town for the Dain Manufacturing Company, later John Deere; today it is mostly bungalows and detached houses along and off Kingsway, a few facing the water.
• Crowland — a township created in 1788 and long since folded into the city; the name lives on in east Welland around Crowland Avenue. Post-war bungalows and detached homes, often with a yard that leaves room to walk round the car.
• Cooks Mills — the easternmost part of the city, on Lyons Creek and cut off from the built-up area by the bypass channel. Past the houses along the roads it is mostly woodlots and fields, and country lots come with long drives.
• Downtown and West Main — the older blocks along East and West Main Street beside the waterway, with century homes, duplexes and houses split into units. Parking can be one narrow drive or a strip shared with next door.
• Merritt Island and the waterway trail — the long, narrow park strip between the recreational waterway and the Welland River, starting near downtown. Streets that back onto that canopy get the leaves, sap and birds that come with it.
• The north end, Woodlawn and the college — family homes, semis and two-storeys around Woodlawn Road and First Avenue near the Niagara College campus. A shared rental near campus can mean several cars on one drive.
• Seaway and the Niagara Street corridor — bungalows and mid-century houses around Seaway Mall on Niagara Street.

What Has to Be in Place When We Arrive

The two things the van cannot carry are water and electricity: an outside tap and a working outlet no more than about 75 feet from the parked car, confirmed while booking. Headlight restoration skips that. Leave room to swing every door open and walk a polisher down both sides.

Worth flagging when you book: a Cooks Mills property where the tap is at the house and the car is out by a shed; a downtown duplex with one driveway and two households; a college rental with housemates’ cars in the way; a condo board that controls visitor parking; or a boat trailer behind the garage. That matters more when the van has come all the way down the 406.
